Blaxunshine continues to roll the film
/bending the wrist & will be back w/ another instalment of 6 Pack
Cinema Awards as movies are being watched ending in a release date
of 7.
7..as in a 6 pack & one for the road.
The golden amber will once again flow
for vol VII so assign a designated driver & check back by week's
end to see how it all goes down.
Coming to the bottom of this week's 6
Pack but still one more nomination for Best Picture for the Week of L
before handing out the last golden amber.
From 1971 Alan Arkin's Little Murders
After witnessing Alfred Chamberlain
giving no resistance & being beat up by a group of thugs Patsy
Newquist now has a new man in her life. Her dream is to marry him &
mold him into the vision that she holds. Not so easy as Alfred is an
emotion cripple who's only joy in life comes for taking pictures of
shit & sleeping...A must for any man who is ready to tie the
knot.
Before wrapping it all up for this week
of film watching I'd like to thank those who came by this weeks
awards. A little late getting it all out but better late then never.
Besides it was hotter then a syphilis ridden whore's cunt this week
so I wasn't @ my computer as much this week.
A bit of self pandering & some
other plugs before hand. As always Blaxunshine can be followed on
Twitter @Blaxunshine w/ the movies that are being watched through out
the week & other cyber flatulence. As well Im now on
blogtalkradio w/ 6-Pack-Radio Did a fair amount of shows this last
week but that might not always be the case. You can get an account of your own on blogtalkradio & follow to know when the live shows
are, check me out on twitter as I'll let you know or just check out
the archives. A
few new followers on Twitter that Im following back that are good
shits. A couple w/ their own websites so I recommend checking out HorrorFreakNews & DailyDeadNews
Alright enough of that fellatio / on to
the big award for the Week of L. Best Picture - The Pabst Blue Ribbon
Movies that didn't make the cut –
Lock Up, Let's Get Harry, Logan's Run & Layer Cake
Again the nominees are – Little
Murders, The Laughing Policeman, Love At First Bite, The Last Detail,
Let Sleeping Corpses Lie & Less Than Zero
And the winner is..
The Last Detail
The Last Detail would never be made in
today's movie market place. That's one of the reasons why I love it.
There's nothing stylish about it & it has a great sharp &
foul mouth. It's just a fantastic performance & character driven
film. In the end it leaves me drained because I wished it didn't
turn out the way it did but as film realist it shouldn't have
happened any other way. For it's honesty & realism Im truly
thankful. It's a little gem.
Well that will do it for yet another
week of Blaxunshine 6 Pack Cinema Awards but the beer is chillin in
the ice box & the films are rolling for vol VII that will be out
by next week's end.
One more golden amber to get to before
handing out the award for Best Picture of the Week of L. Yet another
nomination though for the big Blue Ribbon.
From 1979 Stand Dragoti's Love At First
Bite
After being evicted from his castle in
Transylvania Count Vladimir Dracula moves to New York in the time of
disco in search of a bride. He thinks he's found his partner to be
in model Cindy Sondheim but her boyfriend/shirk Dr Rosenberg has
other plans. A descendant of the Van Helsing Rosenberg knows the
truth about the Count & does all he can to stop the vampire from
taking Cindy away & making her a visitant of his blood thirsty
lust.
On to the next award for that moment
that was so good, so bad it was awesome or just fucking ugly that it
stuck w/ me more than anything else – The Colt 45
The nominees are..
Little Murders – Existential Wedding
Elliott Gould finally surcomes to
marriage but doesn't want God mentioned in the ceremony. He finds a
Reverend to perform the service in the existentialist Donald
Sutherland. His vows are a thing of beauty that I think every
marriage ceremony should be performed this way.
The Last Detail –The Boys Get Randy Quaid Drunk
On the way to taking Randy Quaid to the
clink Jack Nicholson decide that Quaid should have some beer before
he is put away. W/ what starts w/ a enough drinks to get the young
man buzzed soon moves to a motel room for some more. That just isn't
enough & another beer run is made & the 3 men drink until
they are good & plowed...I remember nights of drinking like this
that you can't even function by the end & will lay your bed
anyway that you can find it.
Love At First Bite – Black Chicken
While flying through Harlem as a bat
George Hamilton happens into the apartment of a hungry family that
think he's a chicken tagging my favorite line of the movie – Black
Chicken...I wonder if bat is finger lickin good if it is Kentucky
Fried w/ 11 herbs & spices.
The Laughing Policeman – Louis
Gossett Jr Badass Cop
Gossett Jr comes across a pimp that is
smacking his ho around & has a few cuffs of his own to try to get
some information. While the pimp is down he reaches for his gack but
Gossett get real cool on his ass by saying 'that better be a sandwich
because what ever you're reaching for your gonna eat it'...I just
think that's a good catch phrase that might as well came out of the
mouth of Dirty Harry.
Let Sleeping Corpses Lie – Guthrie
The Zombie
I think if you're a fan of zombie
movies everyone has their favorite undead of all time. Personally
mine is Guthrie the tramp. From the first time I saw Let Sleeping
Corpses Lie I fell in love w/ him & I smile w/ joy whenever I see
him now. His first appearance may be the best scene in this movie &
he's forever embedded in my physique. He deserves a special spot in
the horror hall of fame even if this film is unjustly overlooked.
Lock Up – Homo-erotica
It may not appear this way to the
average viewer but thanks to reading the review of Lock Up on RuthlessReviews many years ago I can't watch this film
w/out a homoerotic eye & actually makes it a bit more enjoyable
then it rightfully deserves to be...you should never spray paint
another man's ass red when you're in the pen.
And the winner is...
Existential Wedding
This may be my favorite wedding
ceremony that I have ever witnessed. It almost brought a tear of joy
to my eye. Why let all the biblical text & chains of oppression
of matrimony get in the way? The Rev's success ratio may not be
impressive but @ least his words are truthful. Why do we really need
to bullshit one another especially in the site of the deity?
Gonna pull the last one from the pack &
serve up the Blue Ribbon in a moment as I have it getting nice &
chilled in the ice box. Stay frosty.
Into the 2nd half of this
week's 6 Pack riding that 3 beer buzz. Still more to tie on but
before the next golden amber award but before hand the next
nomination for Best Picture of the Week of L.
From 1973 Stuart Rosenberg's The
Laughing Policeman
A late night bus shooting becomes more
of a mystery as Sgt Jake Martin's partner was one of the victims.
Supposedly on vacation Martin suspects he was working on another
case. W/ a new partner Martin tries to put the clues together from
the past & catch the culprit before there is another transit
massacre.
Time for the 4th golden
amber filled award of this week. Best Male Performance – The Bud
The nominees are..
Bruce Dern as Inspector Leo Larsen in
The Laughing Policeman
This is great casting of Dern in this.
He looks just like a stereotypical 70s cop. Not as personally
committed to the case as Walter Mattau Dern has to follow his
partners lead. Dern is always a joy to watch for me. He seamlessly
falls into a role but isn't really a chameleon. He's still Bruce
Dern but you believe him in his part. He's one of those great actors
that I can watch do almost anything..it's too bad he didn't eat a
sandwich but he does eat a burrito.
Jack Nicholson as Buddusky in The Last Detail
The Last Detail may be one of
Nicholson's most over looked movies. To see him here is why I love
films from the 70s more than any other decade. Always great here
Nicholson is 'badass'. That's how he got the name. He's a character
that you can almost fall in love w/ even though he's a military man.
In the end you want to hate him because he has to do his job because
your sympathies are w/ Randy Quaid. Personally he's unforgettable
from the first time I ever saw this film.
Elliott Gould as Alfred Chamberlain in
Little Murders
For a little while in this I thought
Gould was suffering w/ mild retardation but he's a man that is
emotionally stunned & disenchanted by life that it becomes a
thing of beauty that he can only find enjoyment in photographing
shit. It's so under played that it's over played. His estrangement
from the actual concept of love is tragic & hilarious @ the same
time. What man would actually find the greatest enjoyment from sex
is that you get a better sleep?
Robert Downey Jr as Julian in Less Than
Zero
Another shade of the Brat Pack movie
Robert Downey Jr is probably the most tragic of them all. He's a
real fucking mess here. @ times I wanted to give him some chap-stick
because his lips looked so rough from hard living & drug use.
Tore @ my heart strings that he had to suck the cock to pay for his
habits...hell I would flip burgers for 23 hours a day before I had to
eat some guy's baloney.
George Hamilton as Count Vladimir
Dracula in Love At First Bite
George Hamilton has been in the
business of film for almost 55 years & he will always be
remembered to me for 2 roles – Zorro the Gay Blade & Dracula in
Love At First Bite. Hamilton is hilarious in this role making this
one of my top 6 Dracula movies. He's debonair enough to take on the
vampire role & carry it into the 70s. The laughs come easy from
him too. Im almost rolling on the floor when he says how sad he is
that he can't enjoy garlic bread.
Sonny Landham as Chink Weber in Lock Up
I became a fan of Landham after seeing
him as Billy Bear in 48hrs. Always glad to see him show up in movies
or TV work. In Lock Pp he plays to his greatest strength which is
sheer intimidation. He's a great 2nd adversary to
Stallone outside of Donald Sutherland. Personally if I ever went to
prison the last person I would want on my ass is someone the likes of
Sonny Landham. That big Indian will fuck you up.
And the winner is..
Jack Nicholson in The Last Detail
By 1973 Nicholson is really coming into
his own (his next project after The Last Detail was Chinatown) after
working for Roger Corman & doing more drive-in style movies. His
performance as Buddusky is proof positive why he was one who ruled
70s cinema for acting talent. He's a consummate character that is
100% unique & is rightly deserving of the love of fans &
those in the business. I wish they had made a prequel to this movie
when it came out called Badasssss Buddusky.
One more golden amber to get to before
the this week's big Blue Ribbon winner.
Capping off the first half of this 6
Pack to work on that 3 beer buzz in a moment but still more nominees
for the Best Picture for the week of L.
From 1987 Marek Kanievska's Less
Than Zero
Clay returns home from semester of
college for Xmas & soon comes to realize that he is growing out
of the spoiled California life style & his best friend Julian is
a fucking mess. Even his ex-girlfriend Blair who he starts a romance
up again w/ has quite the little cocaine habit of her own. Julian is
up to his ass in debt w/ his pusher who is making him hustle to pay
off the money owed but Clay hopes to save him from his demons,
downward spiral of self destruction & keep his ass out of 8
inches of trouble.
Time for the 3rd golden
amber of this week's 6 Pack for The Best Female Performance – The
C.L.I.T.
And the nominees are..
Jeannine Mestre as Katie in Let
Sleeping Corpses Lie
I like junkies in the 70s. I don't
know if films from that era have a little grime around the edges and
junkies always seem dirtier, hungrier & little more mentally
unbalanced w/ the filthy habit. Mestre plays that nicely coupled w/
the terror of seeing her husband murdered & the threat of the
living dead.
Jenny Agutter as Jessica in Logan's Run
Although personally I didn't find a lot
to enjoy from Logan's Run I did like Agutter. She off set my
annoyance of Michael York that I always have when I watch films of
his. Fairly attractive I did find a very natural sensuality to her &
didn't mind when she took off her clothes even though this film is
pretty sly about it.
Marcia Rodd as Patsy Newquist in Little
Murders
Rodd here is one of the characters that
if I ever met a woman like this I would run for my fucking life.
It's like she's on beans she has so much positive energy. Her
thoughts on marriage & molding a man makes me hate & fear a
multitude of the female populist. Watching her was like watching a
horror movie in romantic comedy form.
Cathy Lee Crosby as Kay Butler in The
Laughing Policeman
Personally I found Crosby could have
used some more screen time. I think that she only has like 3 scene.
As the wife of a cop who was killed in a bus shooting she's basically
the only female in a film full of male flat feet. She has a great
scene w/ Walter Matthau after he finds some dirty pictures of her &
her deceased husband in his desk & is using them to get answers
on his ex-partner's character. Matthau even gives her a cuff to the
face & although she feels the sting she doesn't crumble from it.
Unfortunately that's the last we see of her on screen.
Susan Saint James as Cindy Sondheim in
Love At First Bite
Saint James is sorta in a thankless
role in Love At First Bite as George Hamilton & Richard Benjamin
steal every scene from her that they are in. Her character's sorta
flaky & she carries that well. She's really more suited for
prime time television like she was on Kate & Allie but she does
hold her own even if her comic timing is a bit different then those
around her.
Jami Gertz as Blair in Less Than Zero
No one can ever accuse Gertz of being a
good actress but she is a pretty face & physically plays well on
screen. I have seen Less Than Zero a number of time & usually
she drives me crazy but this time I looked @ it in a different
light..she's supposed to be high on cocaine. That would explain why
it appears most of the time she's not quite all there..well except
for that last scene where she's straight & grieving the death of
Robert Downey Jr..maybe she did a couple of bumps & we just
didn't see it.
And the winner is..
Marcia Rodd in Little Murders
I marvel @ Rodd & hated woman
kind @ the same moment. As a male it takes you out of that safe zone
& realize that a large percentage of the female population just
might be from another planet. Just on its own it's frightening but
Little Murders is quite offbeat & smart on it's own. She fits
perfectly & when she is murdered it is almost as if this entire
movie collapses. Until then you don't really realize how much weight
she is actually carrying.
Half walk through but a lot come. You
might have a slight buzz after the first 3 but you don't start
feeling the effects until you throw a few more back.
Still cracking into this 6 Pack for the
week of L & plenty to go. Get to the next award in a moment but
before that the next nomination for the big Blue Ribbon for Best
Picture of the Week.
From 1973 Hal Ashby's The Last Detail
After stealing 40 dollars from a
charity cash box Meadows is heads up the river for 8 years & 2
navy men are ordered to bring him to the cling in Portsmouth.
Meadows is just a young buck & hasn't done any actually living so
navy man 'Badass' Buddusky decides that he should be shown some life
that he missed out on by giving him one last good time that includes
drinking, whoring & ice skating.
Time to serve up the 2nd
golden amber of this week's 6 Pack. For the person or thing in media
that has had a profound impact on me over the years / The Life of
Influence Under the Influence – The 40
This week's 40 goes to Grindhouse's
favorite scumbag David Hess.
I was originally introduced to Hess in
my early teens when I had seen the notorious Last House on the Left.
I fucking hated Last House for years & didn't give Hess much
thought until my taste in film watching sorta switched when I became
bored w/ what mainstream cinema was churning out & I started to
watch more older films especially Grindhouse & Drive-In. I
figured it was about time that I watched Last House again &
although I didn't overtly become a fan of it Hess struck a cord w/
me. From there I stumbled across House on the Edge of the Park that
was on a Brentwood video compilation & I was sold on him. I
began seeking his stuff & Hitch-Hike soon followed which I
fucking fell in love w/ & is my favorite of the lot. Sadly
outside of these 3 film he's not really given a chance to shine; not
in the same light anyways. He does show up in Wes Craven's Swap
Thing & is the best part but nothing else I have seen really
stands out other then Im just happy to see him when he's given screen
time. I even try to seek out his television work on shows like Knight
Rider, The Fall Guy, Baretta & Manimal. I do actually remember
seeing his face on The A-Team when I was a kid.
Although I meant to I didn't watch Last
House on the Left during this week of L. I have seen it about 5
times now over the years & although I find Craven a bit sloppy w/
it it has grown on me immensely. The last time I did take it in was
when Hess died back in October. When I heard that he had passed away
I was a little numb. It's strange the way seeing certain people in
film when it's their time to go effects you. It's sorta like that
uncle that you really liked but only see on occasion dies. There
aren't tears but you do feel like something has been taken from you.
Last weekend I signed up for
blogtalkradio & my first show was of Hess music. Although I suck
as an actual DJ & this was my first go on this form you should
check-it out.
Still a lot more to go but I need to
take another trip to the fridge for a cold one as this heat is
kicking my ass.
Going to get that cold delicious golden
amber in a moment but before that the first nomination for Best
Picture for the Week of L.
From 1974 Jorge Grau's The Living Dead
at Manchester Morgue
Actually saw this as Let Sleeping
Corpses Lie (that most know it by) but it doesn't really matter as it
goes by over 20 different titles. A ultra-wave pesticide is bringing
the dead back to life & like all living dead they have a hunger
for human flesh. George & Edna are caught up in the zombie
nightmare & try to warn the town folk & those responsible
before they end up being a hot meal themselves. Unfortunately the
local inspector believes they are the responsible party for the
gruesome murders. A little gem in the zombie sub-genre that should
be a must see by fans of the living dead or old school horror in
general.
Time to serve up the first golden amber
of the week. The Best Soundtrax or Score – The Rolling Rock
As I said @ the beginning of the show I
didn't get to as many movies as I wanted to this week so the
nominations are a little thinner. Not a lot really jumped out @ me
so there is only 4 nominees instead of the usually 6. I just don't
feel like handing out ribbons to the fat kid just because he ran the
race.
The nominees are..
Love @ First Bite
The disco soundtrax to Love @ First
Bite is a lot of fun & gives the vampire theme a nice 70s campy
bite. Patricia Hodges's Fly by Night should have been a disco smash
setting a new trend of guys going to the club wearing capes. It just
may be a staple addition to my Halloween soundtrax. If it still
lived in a house to hand out candy to the little goblins & ghouls
I would blare it out into the cold October night.
Layer Cake
Layer Cake has a great mix of mood in
it's soundtrax from Scissor Sisters, FC Kahuna & the only Kylie
Minogue song I like w/ Can't Get Blue Monday out of My Head. Duran
Duran's Ordinary World almost become haunting w/ osculated w/ extreme
violence. There's a touch of the 80s w/ The Cult & XTC. The 60s
are even given some dues as Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones is
even thrown in for good use but not near the effect as used in a
Scorsese. Even though I found Layer Cake lost it's way a bit half
way through it does deserve some credit for blending the element
especially it's choice of music.
Less Then Zero
Less then Zero has one of the best
soundtrax for late 80s movies. A lot of covers here w/ Aerosmith,
Poison & Slayer even having a go @ the classic
In-A-Godda-Da-Vida. Ive always liked The Bangles take on Simon &
Garfunkel’s Hazy Shade of Winner. Also included the like of The
Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cult, Public Enemy & my favorite song
by LL Cool J Goin Back to Cali. Throw in some classic like The Doors
& Jimi Hendrix when it doesn't even rightfully need it.
Let Sleeping Corpses Lie
A mix of eerie groove Giuliano
Sorgini's score really grows on me every time I watch this movie
especially the theme song. Someone along the line in the 70s should
have lifted it & used it for a living dead porn...maybe I should
get on that throw back project right now.
And the winner is..
Less Then Zero
I original bought the Less Then Zero
soundtrack when I was down in the Appalachian region w/ my youth
group when we were homes renovations for the less fortunate. It
wasn't really given a fair shake w/ those that I was working w/ but
what did they fucking know. They were listening to DJ Jazzy Jeff &
the Fresh Prince. It sorta fell into my vast tape collect after that
& I didn't listen to it for a while. Some years later when
watching Less Then Zero on video I cracked it out again & really
feel in love w/ large chunks of it. Listening to a lot of metal I
was really behind the Slayer song. Until watching it this week I
didn't realize how strong it is. I went & listened to every song
again especially Roy Orbison's Life Fades Away that he wrote w/ Glenn
Danzig. Hauntingly beautiful like only Roy can do.
Still plenty of more on tap as that
first was only seemed like a cold shot.
Welcome once again to Blaxunshine 6
Pack Cinema where the awards are chillin on ice ready to be served up
to this week's winners for the week of L.
Things got a little side tracked this
past week & didn't get to as many movies as I hoped to w/ only 10
watched but there are a number of reasons for that. First off I fell
asleep while watching Logan's Run. I thought that I only nodded out
for a moment but it turned out that I missed about a half of an hour
of it so I had to watch it again. That was really unfortunate on my
behalf because it wasn't all that great & I found it a bit over
rated. The fact that it is being remade (other then they remake
everything) is lost on me...maybe I just didn't have my crackers out
of the 70s cheese.
As well Blaxunshine is now on
blogtalkradio & I ended up doing a number of shows on the weekend
so instead of the orgy of film I usually watch on Friday &
Saturday I was editing music files & was on the air. It's good
though because besides film music has always been one of my life time
interests. I went to school briefly for radio & television &
for a few years I DJ'd in adult clubs to pay the rent & student
loan. Looking back @ my time behind the mic it was probably the best
job I ever had but I didn't stay because it really felt like I was
going no where plus the violence in the club was increasing w/ the
arrival of bike gangs. Truthfully I got out when the getting was
good because the other foot did drop w/ violent incidence @ the club
which could have cost me my life or @ least a good beating. As well
when the smoking ban went into effect business dropped off like
crazy. Ive been back a few times since & it's a shell of its
former self. Going there makes me long for the days of packed houses
partying w/ close to 2 dozen strippers & the feature attraction
(who half the time was a porn star). For a young man in his 20s it
was actually good shit to be a part of & I wouldn't have traded
anything in the world for taking pictures of lesbians my first couple
days there...but it burns you out.
So anyways..there is now Blaxunshine_6-Pack-Radio ..for a little while anyways if you want
to check that shit out. Im pretty green @ talking once again &
Im not the personality I once was. A lot more laid back now.
Going to get things rolling here in a
moment w/ the 6 Pack Cinema Awards but speaking of music gonna start
things off like I always like to w/ this show – A music number
From last week's winner for Best
Picture of the Color here's Lynyrd Skynyrd w/ Saturday Night Special
I actually went to see the surviving
members of Lynyrd Skynyrd play w/ Ted Nuggent once but left almost
before it started. The sound was terrible in our crummy arena &
once the bands started they closed the beer stands. I was fucking
pissed right off. I had planned on tying one on & rockin out so
after Nuggent played Stranglehold I fucked off, went to Don Cherry's
(which was w/in walking distance), watched the hockey game, drank
pints & ate chicken until my heart was content.
Watching that clip right now &
having a beer @ home was better then being @ the area.
Gonna start serving them up in a moment
but first a trip to my own personal beer stand..& thankfully no
line ups @ the washroom.
